Weaverville to apply for FEMA grant

Weaverville Town Manager Mike Morgan hopes to receive about $54,000 from FEMA in to help cover cleanup costs related to the Dec. 19, 2009, snow storm that dumped more than a foot of snow on North Buncombe.

The town is also applying for a FEMA Hazardous Mitigation Grant in the amount of $724,000for three emergency generations to back up the Ivy River Treatment Plant. Power was lost at the plant during the snowstorm, and while there is a generator to back up the building itself, there is no backup source to power the treatment. Weaverville can borrow water from Asheville, which does have back generators for its treatment plant, during such times.

Town council approved a $13,000 budget amendment to cover costs related to the preparation of the grant application.
